In 1894 the local Band of Hope Union (a Victorian teetotal organisation) raised funds for the construction of an elaborately-inscribed public fountain in St Nicholas Square in Newcastle to ensure local people had free access to fresh, clean drinking water as an alternative to alcohol. The fountain now stands at the top of Bigg Market. July 2014.
