White linen worked with red silk. The ground is divided into diamonds by rosette-like flowers. In each diamond is a conventional plant form. The back is much coarser linen than the front.

English coif, late 16th century. Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Label reads: gilt thread in chain stitch on linen with cut and drawn work and needlepoint fillings. (I'd not be surprised if this is later, but I am not an embroidery expert by any stretch.)

Linen, embroidered in black silk.  Coif: one length of material shaped at each end, folded in half, openwork seaming from edges half way to fold at top; hem at lower edge with drawstring, small sections of linen inside lower corner for reinforcement; embroidery worked diagonally in sprig pattern of leaves and Tudor roses, alternating with dots in back, buttonhole and knot stitches.  Forehead cloth: triangular with small tabs at each end of long side; embroidered as coif; pin markings in tabs…
