First Steeplechase Park (1897 - 1907) Coney Island New York. Pictured is the Airship Tower with the Steeplechase Track and Pier in the background, circa 1905. The Revolving Airship Tower was an aerial corkscrew ride. On July 28, 1907 at 4 am, a lighted cigarette carelessly thrown into a waste receptacle in the Cave of the Winds attraction caused a long smoldering fire to break out. Steeplechase was soon rebuilt. The "Airship Tower" was converted into a water tower.
