Louie Zamperini peering through a hole made by a 20mm cannon shell. Note the emergency splice in the rudder control cables. It was done by Zamperini while in-flight back to Funafuti Island after the April 18,1943 mission to Nauru. The plane had almost 600 holes in it when it landed and all the enlisted gunners were wounded, one succumbing to his wounds later that night (T/Sgt. Harold Brooks - Waist Gunner/Radio Operator).
