Walking through this gate and thinking of all those who preceded, was a thrill. The Porta Nigra (Black Gate), Trier's Roman Gate, one example of the many vestiges of the Roman Empire still found in Germany. Byzantine influences are visible in its church and relics...an interesting testament to continuity within what we often understand as absolutes.
Talbot House at Poperinge. Thousands of British soldiers passed through Talbot House during the three years it was open from the end of 1915. It was a place where rank was left at the front door. There was always an urn of tea on the go.
