A few days ago, I was at the Kamigamo Shrine (上賀茂神社) in Northern Kyoto, and took this picture of the “Holy horse” in front of the second Torii (main entrance) and with a view of the Hosodono in the back ground. The horse later participated in a Shinto ceremony related to the Karasu Sumo event. #Kamigamo, #Kyoto, #Japan, #WorldHeritage, #上賀茂神社, #KarasuSumo

Today, I was at the Kamigamo Shrine (上賀茂神社) in Kyoto and the shrine staff was busy preparing for the Shōgatsu celebrations. This year is the “year of the Horse” and the Hosodono pavilion had large ema with Horse emblem on each side. The small pyramid shaped sand cones are called “tatezuna”. These tatezuna represent the sacred mountain Kami-yama, which rises behind the shrine. Legend has it that the shrine deity descended from the heavens to reside on Kami-yama.

While visiting Kamigamo shrine (上賀茂神社) in Kyoto, yesterday a shrine attendant was constructing a Tatesuna (立砂) in front of the Sai-Den. Tatesuna (立砂) are a pair of standing cones of sand in front of Sai-Den at Kamigamo-jinja. They are traditionally construed as allusions to a pair of sacred mountains.
