The Black Sea Battleship Twelve Apostles (1888/92).  The 12 Apostles) was that peculiarly Russian invention, a Black Sea battleship. These were deliberately small (less than 9,000 tons versus 10-12,000 for Russia's oceangoing battleships) and medium-performance ships. They were developed for economy of operation, for intimidating the Turks and potentially rebellious indigenous people of the Black Sea basin.
