Millions of Fireflies Fluttering in Mexican Forest.

Fireflies: Lampyridae is a family of insects in the beetle order Coleoptera. They are winged beetles, and commonly called fireflies or lightning bugs for their conspicuous crepuscular use of bioluminescence to attract mates or prey. Fireflies produce a "cold light", with no infrared or ultraviolet frequencies. This chemically-produced light from the lower abdomen may be yellow, green, or pale-red, with wavelengths from 510 to 670 nanometers.

Fireflies mainly emit light to attract mates, though this communication method is also used to defend territory. Though it is mostly adult fireflies that glow, there are some species where the larvae and the eggs also emit light.

I hope that one day i am able to catch them and show my kids the dancing stars

Firefly - we've always called them lightening bugs.love them since I was a kid.

Firefly, Detroit, Michigan The only thing I miss about living in the South - the beautiful sight of fireflies (They were wiped out in Urban areas in the by the mosquito abatement DDT applications - we had to drive out of town to see them)

The Firefly Squid, whose scientific name is the Watasenia Scintillans, is three inches long on average and is considered to be a cephalopod. Its body is covered in photophores, and this is what allows it to glow a light blue and communicate with other members of its species. Light it up blue.

Big Dipper Firefly (Photinis Pyralis)- Fireflies emit light mostly to attract mates, although they also communicate for other reasons as well, such as to defend territory and warn predators away. In some firefly species, only one sex lights up. In most, however, both sexes glow;

Lightning bugs or fireflies are not flies, but they are beetles that can produce lights. Lightning bugs can light up during all stages of their lives, including larvae and pupae. In some species of lightning bugs, the eggs glow as well!
