BASSETT & GRYLLS MINE | Porkellis, Cornwall: The pumping engine house at Tyack's shaft. The mine was an important part of the Wendron mining district. Built in 1860 after a flooding disaster in 1858 when 60 men and a boy perished in an older section of the mine. Local rumour has it that one of the drowned miners kept all his savings in gold sovereigns in a belt around his waist because he did not trust his wife. The treasure, it is said, remains at the bottom of the mine.' ✫ღ⊰n
