In 1793, hundreds of spectators & several founding fathers had watched the first man fly free over the new republic. Frenchman Jean-Pierre Blanchard rose in a hot air balloon over the rooftops of Philadelphia, then the nation's capital. From that point on, regular balloon flights brought crowds of several thousand onlookers whenever take-offs were expected, and ‘balloonomania’ swept right across the country.
