Mt. Athos Monastary: NO WOMEN ARE ALLOWED ON THE ISLAND. The island (named after one of the Gigantes who threw a mountain at Zeus) is said to have been requested by Saint Mary, because of its beauty and asked her Son for it to be hers. A voice was heard saying: "Let this place be your inheritance and your garden, a paradise and a haven of salvation for those seeking to be saved". The mountain was then consecrated as the garden of the Mother of God and was out of bounds to all other women.
