King Eiders are really cool sea ducks, which spend their lives far north of where most people can hope to see them. Of those that do stray to the south, almost none are adult males. Seeing them in this plumage is a treat that most people go a lifetime without experiencing. While I was waiting for PenAir to actually get a plane into St. Paul, I took some time to bird Alaska east of Anchorage one day, and was lucky enough to stumble upon this female Spruce Grouse. I digiscoped it while it was in the shade of a stand of spruce trees.
