Part of the Forma Urbis Romae or Severan Marble Plan. A massive marble map of ancient Rome, created under the emperor Septimius Severus between 203 and 211 CE. It originally measured 60 ft wide by 45 ft high.
A fragment of the Forma Urbis Romae, a giant marble representation of the city of Rome circa 200AD. The plan was 18m wide, is very detailed and surprisingly modern. For details, see the Stanford U project @ http://formaurbis.stanford.edu/
Trajan is one of the most highly-regarded Roman Emperors in history, being second in 18th-century historian Edward Gibbon's list of "Five Good Emperors." His impact on Rome was seen everywhere in daily life, and still can be seen to this day.
