Spitfire Mk I GR-G was flown from RAF Hornchurch by F/O Charles P "Paddy" Green in the first combat of No 92 Squadron RAF during Operation Dynamo on 23 May 1940. With an Me 109 probably destroyed and another damaged, the 26-year-old South African was wounded in a second patrol by an armour-piercing round in the thigh, flying back in a daze, faint from loss of blood, with his thumb stuck in the hole pressing on the severed arteries and the oxygen turned full up to stop him fainting.
