This photograph is of the 369th Infantry, known as the Harlem Hellfighters. Over 380,000 African Americans who served in World War I. The 369th helped to repel the German offensive, and they were first Allied unit to reach the Rhine. They were the first Americans to be awarded the Croix de Guerre, and 171 of the officers and men received individual medals for their actions. Source: US National Archives
