The Panama Canal. This, of course, runs straight through Panama.  With the creation of this canal ships no longer had to travel all the way around South America.  Which shortened the trip considerably!

One cannot go to Panama City without taking the opportunity to watch the ships traversing the canal through the Panama Canal Locks. I found great fun in watching the ships enter each gate and raise to enter the successive lock.

The city was founded on the western end of a treacherously marshy islet known as Manzanillo Island. As part of the construction of the Panama Railroad, the island was connected to the Panamanian mainland by a causeway and part of the island was drained to allow the erection of permanent buildings.
