The leaves of the dwarf fan palm, a plant native to the Algarve’s Barrocal and mountain regions, are used in this weaving technique, known locally as empreita.  Palm weaving is traditionally done by women, producing objects required for storing, transporting and preserving food items.

The villages of Giões, Martinlongo and Cachopo were once important weaving centres.  The production and preparation of linen is complex and was done collectively, in the heart of the community.  Linen was used to produce garments, and items for household and agricultural use.
