A cadeira originalmente foi pintada de preto, cinzenta e branca. Contudo, foi depois modificado para se assemelhar às pinturas de Piet Mondrian, quando Rietveld entrou no contacto com o trabalho deste artista em 1918. Rietveld juntou-se ao movimento De Stijl em 1919. A cadeira actualmente está no museu de Montreal.
