SANJAY GARG FESTIVE 2016

Questioning the need for reinvention, this collection appropriates weightless ornamentation through nine woven motifs, each hundreds of years old. The chand booti’s crescent moon, single thread kadhwa weave and Lakshmi’s ashrafi coins find new light as occasion wear, needing no intervention. Colours take similar cue; familiar to our eyes is the vibrant yellow of nimbu peela punctuating a palette of angoori pistachio, deep red and rani pink.

Gulbadan was the daughter of Emperor Babur of the Mughal Empire. Her name translates to ‘body of a rose’, where ’gul’ means rose and ‘badan’, body. The textile of the same name has base is filled with a different proportion and a floral pattern woven on top of it - traditionally the flower is outlined in red thread. It is woven on a narrow loom of 28 inch width, as it would be too heavy otherwise. Sanjay Garg - Festive 2016, featured: ‘Vrindavani’ natural gulbadan skirt in silk brocade…

Engineered panel legha’s are woven on the loom and not alterable, for the the naksha of 1 panel is 45 inches and there is no repeat. Instead, the size of each motif decreases proportionally because the threads are being reduced, akin to the perspective of a dome.
