Val Perrin’s Empty Brick Lane - In this final selection from Val Perrin‘s superb pictures of Spitalfields taken between 1970-72, and published now for the first time, I have focussed on his atmospheric photography of the deserted streets, recording the sense of abandonment and dereliction which prevailed at that time. | Spitalfields Life

The Huguenots originally established the silk weaving industry in Spitalfields, in the East End of London during the seventeenth century. Incidentally one of the last remaining English silk weavers namely Stephen Walters - began weaving silk in Spitalfields before relocating to Sudbury Suffolk where they are still weaving today. Spitalfields has by association become known as the ‘Cradle of the Silk Industry’ and the Spitalfields design has become synonymous with the finest silk ties.
