It doesn’t quite have the richness or refinement of a Paul John or an Amrut, but then it took Paul John and Amrut a while to develop the richness, refinement and profiles they have now. Rampur Double Cask is a decent, sippable whisky and Rampur is getting better all the time. Definitely, a brand to keep an eye on.

After the first sip I found myself being drawn to it, almost craving it at times because it had this unique sherry punch to it that continues to get less and less common in whisky these days. The Amrut spirit seems to mix well with sherry and I hope they can do something like this Amrut Intermediate Sherry again in the near future. Finding I Am, Something To Do, Punch, Spirit

After the first sip I found myself being drawn to it, almost craving it at times because it had this unique sherry punch to it that continues to get less and less common in whisky these days. The Amrut spirit seems to mix well with sherry and I hope they can do something like this Amrut Intermediate Sherry again in the near future.

First the herbal pine notes disappear, then the pistachio notes and after a bit more water it changes to more of a fruity malty graham style whisky. I’ve had very few malts that change this dramatically with some water. It’s quite remarkable, and, quite tasty. Pistachio Gelato, Golden Raisins, Black Licorice, Graham

There’s a lot going on in the Paul John Oloroso Select Cask, it’s just fascinating to go back to over and over; this is an honorable mention and hat tip to the original PJ Oloroso. A Solid whisky with a complex delivery that reminds me a bit of some of the good sherry cask Kavalans I’ve had with how much it’s integrated an developed into the spirit. There’s a lot going on in the Paul John Oloroso Select Cask, it’s just fascinating to go back to over and over; this is an honorable mention and hat tip to the original PJ Oloroso. A somewhat interesting malt that shows the dry “olde candy shoppe” nature of PX and pulls in a touch of nutty spice. I’m not a mega-fan of PX in general but I think they did an ok job with it here in the Paul John PX Select Cask. Like Port, PX is a tricky beast, it can easily take over the whisky and overwhelm the spirit and this walks up to that line but doesn’t quite cross. A somewhat interesting malt that shows the dry “olde candy shoppe” nature of PX and pulls in a touch of nutty spice. I’m not a mega-fan of PX in general but I think they did an ok job with it here in the Paul John PX Select Cask. Like Port, PX is a tricky beast, it can easily take over the whisky and overwhelm the spirit and this walks up to that line but doesn’t quite cross.

A blend of peated and unpeated whisky aged in ex-Bourbon and ex-Oloroso casks, the Paul John Christmas Edition 2018 is a stonking good whisky. I love the Paul John Christmas Edition 2019, but tasting the two side-by-side the hat tip goes to the 2018 – but only by the slimmest of margins. Both are amazing, however this pulls out a slightly richer profile I just can’t get enough of.

Lightly peated, everything about the Paul John Mars Orbiter whisky evokes a sense of something special and of space. The box with its light-up base, the shape of the bottle and even the whisky in it. It’s truly not had to see a crew of space-obsessed folks enjoying a glass of this after a successful launch. This is a whisky that sparks the imagination and I’m damn happy to have tried it. Lightly peated, everything about the Paul John Mars Orbiter whisky evokes a sense of something special and of space. The box with its light-up base, the shape of the bottle and even the whisky in it. It’s truly not had to see a crew of space-obsessed folks enjoying a glass of this after a successful launch. This is a whisky that sparks the imagination and I’m damn happy to have tried it.

I first tried the Paul John Nirvana at an SCWC meeting (the bottle pictured) right before the launch of this whisky. Paul John’s brand rep, Koray, kicked the night off with this and then lead us through a legendary tasting that included PJ new make. Paul John Christmas Edition Review: Bottled at 46%, aged 7+years and priced around $60. It's a cavalcade of Holiday flavors and aromas that befit its name.

Had this a few years ago at a whiskey show and thought “‘eh, it’s ok, let’s see what happens down the road”. A few years have passed and I can no longer just say “eh”. The aroma has a great balance between the sweetness and the smoke; Palate is heavy and oily with a solid tasty delivery of sweetness and smoke; Finish fades out sweet, smoky and oily. It’s a good solid single malt, and a heck of a representation for an entry malt, but could use some more time in oak or even different casks.
