Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center has performed its first procedure to remove a patient's diseased heart and replace it with a SynCardia Temporary Total Artificial Heart. The device fits into a backpack and will act as a "bridge" until a donor heart is available. It provides a strong blood-flow throughout the body and allows patients who are awaiting a heart transplant to leave the hospital.
