HMS Duke of York rides head on into the weather in the treacherous waters approaching Murmansk, 1942. The Murmansk convoy run was one of the deadliest during WW2; brutal weather and U-Boats made sure everybody's life stayed close to statistical extinction.
HMAS Canberra (I) - Royal Australian Navy CAPT Frank E. Getting RAN took command of CANBERRA in June 1942. During the same month CANBERRA took part in offensive sweeps in the Coral Sea as part of Task Force 44, which included US Ships CHICAGO and SALT LAKE CITY.In August 1942 CANBERRA operated with the naval force supporting the American landings at Guadalcanal and Tulagi, operations which ended with her loss in the Battle of Savo Island on 9 August 1942.
Battered Canberra. The Battle of Savo Island has been dogged with controversy. The official Australian naval history, written years later, put the sinking of the Canberra down to 24 Japanese shells that had hit the ship. More recent studies suggest that the damage to Canberra, which had prevented the cruiser from fighting back, was caused by a torpedo fired from the American destroyer, USS Bagley.
On September 17, 1939, the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Courageous was hit by torpedoes from the German submarine U-29, and sank within 20 minutes. The Courageous, on an anti-submarine patrol off the coast of Ireland, was stalked for hours by U-29, which launched three torpedoes when it saw an opening. Two of the torpedoes struck the ship on the port side, sinking it with the loss of 518 of its 1,259 crew members.
