Meet the forbidding Sergeant Alf Foster – a legend of the Manchester City Police’s ‘B’ Division. Born in the Staffordshire town of Burslem in 1895, he served with the Grenadier Guards during the Great War. He joined Manchester City Police on July 27, 1921 at the age of 25. An alley in Moss Side, Manchester, photographed Monday 15th December 1969. I think these were the backs of houses in Claremont Road. Gangs of Manchester Corporation workmen used to, literally, sweep through these alleys in an effort to keep them clear of refuse. One of them, with his broom, can be seen halfway along the alley. I'm not sure what the problem was. What dustbins there were seemed always to be overflowing. One got the impression that some of the inhabitants of the area weren't…
