The First World War was perhaps the key event of the twentieth century. It transformed the political map of Europe and signalled a shift in power away from Europe towards the United States. Tragically its resolution also set the scene for an even greater conflict a generation later
On April 26, 1937, German and Italian warplanes destroyed the Spanish city of Guernica. It was the first such large-scale bombing of a civilian target, and it presaged the massive destruction visited from the air during World War II. This image was taken on May 8, 1937.
Péronne during the Battle of the Somme, 1916--Robert Carlson. "Don't be angry, just be amazed," was the calling card left by Germans on the destroyed town hall of Péronne after their withdrawal to the Hindenberg Line. The sign is on display in Péronne today in the Historial de la grande guerre.
