Caerlaverock Castle, Scotland - The Scottish gov't found it an advantage to have Borderers serve as March Wardens, they knew the area & the people well. "And w/ men like the Maxwells & the Kerrs, there was an element of setting a thief to catch a thief." Also, Scots Borderers were not accepting of "outsiders" being wardens. The downside being that local men could also be involved w/ feuds & alliances & tended to have great contempt for central authority. (info fm "The Steel Bonnets")
